Hollywood director John L. Sullivan (The Palm Beach Story's Joel McCrea) is tired of producing lightweight comedies. He decides to shift gears and make a serious, socially responsible film about human suffering - O Brother, Where Art Thou? However, his producers push back, pointing out that he knows nothing of hardship. In response, Sullivan disguises himself as a hobo and hits the road in search of enlightenment. Along the way, he meets a strong-willed young woman (I Married a Witch's Veronica Lake) and ends up facing more trouble than he could have anticipated. This comedic masterpiece, directed by Preston Sturges (The Lady Eve), is considered one of the finest Hollywood satires and a career highlight for Sturges, a revered figure in the industry.
The DVD Special Edition includes a new 2K digital restoration, as well as an audio commentary from 2001 by filmmakers Noah Baumbach, Kenneth Bowser, Christopher Guest, and Michael McKean. Additionally, it features a 76-minute documentary titled "Preston Sturges: The Rise and Fall of an American Dreamer" made by Bowser for PBS’s American Masters series. There is also a new video essay by film critic David Cairns, with contributions from filmmaker Bill Forsyth. An interview from 2001 with Sandy Sturges, the director’s widow, is included, along with an interview with Sturges by gossip columnist Hedda Hopper from 1951.
The Special Edition also contains archival audio recordings of Sturges. Finally, the package is rounded off with an essay by critic Stuart Klawans.
