Director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) is a hot talent in Hollywood, known for his ability to make audiences laugh. However, he is feeling dissatisfied and wants to move away from comedy to make a serious statement. He decides to purchase the rights to the renowned social-realist novel O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
In order to make his masterpiece as authentic as possible, Sullivan decides to experience the life of the book's downtrodden characters. He sets out on the road as a hobo, where he meets a failed actress (Veronica Lake) who takes him under her wing. Through this journey, Sullivan learns valuable lessons about not patronizing his audience.
Preston Sturges, the writer-director, had an incredible run in the 1940s, creating some of the funniest American comedies ever made, including The Lady Eve, The Palm Beach Story, and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. Sullivan's Travels is considered one of his best works, as it is not only hilarious but also filled with wisdom.
